I’ve never heard of it. What is WASHLET®?
WASHLET® is a toilet with an integrated bidet, also referred to as a shower toilet. It gently targets the intimate areas, cleaning them with a warm stream of water. This gentle cleansing ensures an especially fresh feeling, improved personal hygiene and greater well-being.
At TOTO, the shower toilet is always a combination of two individual elements: WASHLET® and the TOTO ceramic toilet.
What features does WASHLET® have to offer?
Everyone has different needs. This is why we at TOTO develop technologies for our WASHLET® models that our customers can adapt to their individual preferences while protecting the environment. WASHLET® and our toilets always create the perfect symbiosis of hygiene and comfort – only available from TOTO:
- PREMIST covers the toilet bowl with a fine mist of water, making it more difficult for waste and dirt to stick to the ceramic.
- CEFIONTECT: This durable special glaze ensures that the surface has a long-lasting shine, and also keeps bacteria and waste from accumulating in the toilet bowl.
- The powerful and effective
- TORNADO FLUSH thoroughly cleans the entire inside of the toilet bowl.
- Wand jet position: The wand jet extends at precisely 43° to clean the intimate areas. As a result, faeces cannot fall on the wand jet during cleansing.
- Hidden wand jet: The protective flap effectively protects the wand jet and dryer* from getting dirty.
- Self-cleaning wand jet: The wand jet automatically cleans itself inside and out before and after each use.
- Descaling function with automatic descaling programme and/or manual descaling.
- Wand jet material and Clean Case: The wand jet and WASHLET® unit are made of a silicone-based material, making it more difficult for dirt to accumulate.
- WASHLET® attachment: The wand jet extends above the ceramic toilet bowl. This offers additional protection from contact with faeces and protects the technical components from potential damage caused by a clogged toilet.
- EWATER+* cleans the ceramic toilet bowl and wand jet sustainably with electrolysed water.
- ACTILIGHT*: Photocatalytic glaze, this ultimate cleaning technology has the natural power to break down waste and dirt.
- Dryer*: You can use the optional dryer to dry off after rinsing with water.
*Only selected WASHLET ® models have this feature.
Take a closer look at the (additional) features each TOTO WASHLET® model has to offer here.
It seems like a lot of technology for a toilet. Is WASHLET® difficult to use?
Absolutely not. It’s easy to operate and adjust all features using a remote control or a fixed control panel. The symbols are very easy to understand, almost intuitive.
Many models have a memory function that allows up to two people to save their preferred settings.
If I use WASHLET®, will I soak myself as well as my bathroom with water?
No, the water will only spray where it should. TOTO designed this spray to deliver as little water as possible, but as much as needed. Of course, your bathroom will stay dry. You can adjust the position, water pressure, massage settings and oscillation of the WASHLET® warm water spray using the remote control. The spray feature is only activated once you click on the corresponding symbol. Simply click the STOP button to halt the spray at any time. You decide how much time you need to feel clean and refreshed.
You can switch between different types of sprays on all models – just one benefit that makes TOTO shower toilets so special.
Is WASHLET® more hygienic than conventional toilets?
Yes, WASHLET® is setting new standards when it comes to personal hygiene. We always use water to clean ourselves – our hands, faces and bodies. Why shouldn’t we wash with water after using the toilet? WASHLET® cleans the intimate areas gently and naturally with warm water. The result: A comfortable, fresh feeling that ensures greater hygiene, more well-being and improved health – every day.
Toilet paper – yes or no? How do I dry off?
Warm air is the secret to making WASHLET® a paper-free choice. We have incorporated a dryer into a number of our models. After washing with the warm water spray, the dryer leaves you feeling perfectly clean and dry. Many users will then use toilet paper only to make sure that they are totally clean.
Are there different WASHLET® models?
TOTO offers options for every taste and price range – from newcomers to luxury models for more discerning users. GL 2.0 – EK 2.0 – NEOREST AC 2.0, NEOREST EW 2.0 – SG 2.0 – RX/ RX EWATER+/ AF – SX/ EWATER+/ AF – RW/ RW AF – SW/ SW AF – What do these cryptic abbreviations mean? Learn what’s behind these letters and numbers here.
We’ve compiled a helpful overview of all WASHLET® models for your reference. You can also compare the features available in each model with the helpful WASHLET® comparison.
Is WASHLET® actually a luxury item?!
Millions of customers around the world already enjoy WASHLET®. Our goal is to transform everyday rituals into rewarding experiences – making a new quality of life available to everyone. This is why we design WASHLET® models for different standards and price ranges.
What should I do if my WASHLET® suddenly stops working?
You’ll find some basic help in the “What to Do?” and “Troubleshooting” chapters of the instruction manual. At TOTO, we are in constant contact with our plumbers and wholesalers. If you would prefer to speak to someone personally, it’s best to contact the plumber who did the installation and is familiar with our services.
How do I clean my WASHLET®?
We recommend cleaning WASHLET® and the TOTO toilet daily. To clean normal levels of soiling, rinse a soft cloth with water (NO microfibre), wring it out thoroughly, and wipe. If it’s very dirty, you can add a little diluted neutral dishwashing liquid. Afterwards, rinse with plain water. DON’T use toilet paper or microfibre cloth as these can damage WASHLET®. The same applies for thinners, benzene and powder cleansers. Detailed care instructions are available here.
We recommend cleaning TOTO toilets regularly with a clean, moist cloth. Unlike WASHLET®, you can use microfibre cloth here without worry. The CEFIONTECT glaze on TOTO toilets is extremely smooth, hard and durable. If it’s necessary to use cleansers, we recommend a slightly acidic cleanser with vinegar or citric acid to fight limescale, or an alkaline cleaner for fats and oils. TOTO always recommends using mild cleansers and avoiding aggressive cleaning products to protect the environment.
How can I descale my WASHLET®?
Depending on the model, you will have the option of either manual and/or automatic descaling. WASHLET® models with automatic descaling programmes indicate when it’s time for descaling, making it unnecessary to set the water hardness on the device. Find more details in your instruction manual.
Do I need any special products to take care of my WASHLET®?
No. We recommend a series of commercially available products to descale and clean WASHLET®. Detailed care instructions are available here.
Do I need to follow any specific maintenance intervals?
No, TOTO has not defined maintenance intervals for WASHLET®, but there are special cleaning and care instructions you need to follow. It’s similar to maintaining a car: Vehicles do have fixed maintenance intervals every XX,000 kilometres, and WASHLET® is different in this sense. But you still need to check the tyre pressure, fill the windscreen washer fluid and clean the car regularly. As long as you use WASHLET® in line with the specifications in the instruction manual, regular maintenance isn’t necessary. An example: The active descaling feature isn’t started after a specific period of time, but only when needed (LEDs flash).
How long will it take before my WASHLET® is delivered?
Many wholesale dealers in Germany carry our products. Your contractor can usually order WASHLET® within a day. If WASHLET® is not in stock, wholesalers who work with TOTO can order it to arrive in just a couple of days.
Who will install my WASHLET®?
Trained, certified plumbers know how it’s done. Our Retailer search will help you find a service provider in your area.
Are there any structural requirements that need to be met to install WASHLET®?
Installing WASHLET® isn’t rocket science – it’s like any other installation project. Your plumber only needs to make sure that you have separate water and electrical connections available in advance. It’s best to consult a specialised technician. Need a recommendation? Find an expert partner in a few clicks with our Retailer search.
I’m not a plumber or technician. Can I still look at the planning data for the WASHLET® models?
Of course! The planning data, instruction manuals and many technical details are available for downloading from the detailed view of each WASHLET® model on our website.
Is it possible to install WASHLET® after the fact?
It’s possible at any time, provided that you have the separate water and electricity connections in place. You can see which WASHLET® models are compatible with which TOTO toilets here.
Is it possible to install WASHLET® on an existing toilet?
WASHLET® is not really suitable for use as an attachment to conventional toilets because each one has a different shape. Our WASHLET® models do not follow this classic design, and require an additional opening in the toilet bowl to keep the connections hidden – for an elegant, streamlined look.
WASHLET® is always designed to be used with one of TOTO’s toilets. The resulting synergy effects (EWATER+, PREMIST, CEFIONTECT, rimless design, TORNADO FLUSH) ensure that the technologies available in both types of products complement each other perfectly. Several TOTO toilet models allow for WASHLET® to be retrofitted In these cases, it is necessary to have visible water and power connections available next to the toilet. If you would prefer a hidden installation, it’s necessary to make these connections through the ceramic. This requires a special TOTO WASHLET® toilet. You can see an overview of possible combinations here.
Is WASHLET® compatible with the cisterns and installation frame systems designed by other manufacturers?
Yes, all WASHLET® models are compatible (except the auto flush models and NEOREST®) with the conventional installation frames from Geberit and TECE. An overview of compatible WASHLET® models and installation frames is available in the product section of each WASHLET® model on our homepage. You can find general information on how to prepare and position the necessary connections, along with helpful technical details. Feel free to contact us if you have any more compatibility questions.
TOTO brought its own installation frame to market a while ago. This can be combined with selected WASHLET® models for an auto flush feature. Please contact your local technician or contractor for detailed plans and installation. He/she will provide the technical support you need.
Landlords, regulations and specifications – can I install WASHLET® in a rented flat?
WASHLET® requires power and water connections at specific positions. This could require preparatory or reconstruction work, which would usually end up being an upgrade for a rental unit. Be sure to discuss any necessary work with your landlord and get advance approval.
Who is WASHLET® for?
Plain and simple – for everyone, of any age and gender. Children need a little more help at first, but can easily explore and learn how to use the remote control and individual features. What about teenagers, adults and senior citizens? They will all enjoy outstanding hygiene and comfort – an everyday luxury. People with limited physical mobility or who may otherwise need assistance when using the toilet will enjoy the greater independence and privacy that WASHLET® allows.

Is WASHLET® also suitable for people with health issues?
Absolutely. Seniors and people with health problems especially benefit from the comfort and Clean Technology in our WASHLET® models. A Danish study showed that shower toilets have a consistently positive impact on our health. They greatly reduce instances of urinary tract infections and skin issues, and several users are symptom-free thanks to the shower toilet, People who complain of digestion problems confirmed that shower toilets also help with bowel movements.
It’s easy to operate and adjust all WASHLET® functions in line with your personal preferences with the remote control – no more need for difficult movements or poses.
Can children use WASHLET®?
Yes, all WASHLET® models are designed for people of all ages and sizes (once they are able to use the toilet unassisted). Of course, children probably need a little guidance and assistance from their parents when using WASHLET® for the first time.
WASHLET® and pregnancy – is there anything special I need to know?
You can continue to use WASHLET® throughout your pregnancy without any need for concern. Our standard is to deliver perfect hygiene through innovative technologies. This is why WASHLET® is the ideal choice to provide a sense of comfort and wellness throughout this special time.
Is cleaning with water more hygienic? Isn’t it weird without paper?
Water gently cleans our bodies. It makes us feel refreshed and promotes well-being. People have always used the power of water for cleansing. We shower, enjoy baths, and wash our dishes as well as our hands – day after day. Why on earth do we reach for paper when we use the toilet? It’s almost as strange as using tissues to try to clean our clothes.
The habit of washing with water after using the toilet is a tradition in many countries around the world. In Asia, these are referred to as Taharets (cold water cleansing). Of course, France is home to the bidet. TOTO perfected its warm water cleansing with WASHLET® over 40 years ago, offering the ultimate in comfort.
Does WASHLET® use more water?
A four-person household with WASHLET® uses an additional approx. 1,600 l per year when compared to a standard toilet. Of course, this depends on how frequently the toilet is used.
Producing pulp to make toilet paper, for example, requires a great deal of water. The process also produces CO2 emissions, and utilises both electricity and chemical bleaching agents during its manufacture. All things considered, WASHLET® does consume less water than using toilet paper.
How do the WASHLET® models differ in terms of their water and energy use?
Each model has its own special features, and listing them in detail here would take up too much space. You can find all of the facts and figures on the corresponding product detail page. Our WASHLET® comparison gives you the opportunity to easily compare what each model has to offer. If you’d like personal recommendations and all the details, contact your local retailer.
Protecting drinking water and the German Drinking Water Ordinance – does WASHLET® meet these standards?
Water in toilets is rated a hazard class 5 liquid in accordance with EN 1717, which covers the topic of protection against the pollution of potable water. The EN 1717 standard describes the necessary safeguards a device needs to fulfil in order to ensure the quality of the drinking water. All WASHLET® models are intrinsically safe and have their own integrated free outlet, family A, type B or type D. This prevents the backflow of non-potable water into drinking water installations without any additional work necessary.
How much electricity do the different WASHLET® models use?
The average electricity consumption of a four-person household is around 140-180 kWh per year for WASHLET® models with the energy saver feature, and around 180-260 kWh per year for models without the energy saver option. The “from – to” values are different for each model, whereby models with a continuous-flow water heater use less electricity than ones with a warm water tank.
The instruction manual supplied with each WASHLET® model includes helpful tips and instructions on how to use WASHLET® efficiently. These will help you save energy and protect our environment.
How can I find a local plumber or retailer?
Use our Retailer search on our website to find wholesalers, contractors specialised in working with WASHLET® and other TOTO partner technicians in your area. All of them can answer any questions you might have and provide expert technical advice.
Is it possible to see and try the various WASHLET® models?
Yes, of course! Click on “Prova il WASHLET®” to search for the nearest publicly accessible WASHLET® and try it out in person.
What costs should I anticipate when buying WASHLET®?
You should always hire a professional to install WASHLET®. In other words, it would cost the price of the product plus installation. Contact your professional plumber or technician for installation pricing. If you are looking for someone to install WASHLET®, click here to search for retailers.
What follow-up costs should I anticipate over the next several years?
You shouldn’t expect any significant follow-up costs. In addition to the electricity and water costs, you will only need to purchase a commercially available descaling product recommended by TOTO for WASHLET® models with the automatic descaling feature. We recommend models with this programme in regions with especially hard water.
There are no defined maintenance intervals, i.e. there are no additional costs involved here.
What does WASHLET® cost to use each year?
WASHLET® operating costs are very manageable. Example: A four-person household – two adults and two children – will consume approx. 150 kWh per year for WASHLET® RX, which corresponds to electricity costs of around 45 euros. It uses about 1,600 l per year, or approx. 2 euros. This means that WASHLET® costs around 47 euros a year to use. Please note that electricity and water costs will vary based on region and use.
How do I explain WASHLET® to my guests?
Maybe you don’t need to do a lot of explaining in advance. It’s sometimes better to just be open to new experiences. Give your guests the opportunity to have their own personal first WASHLET® experience. Just let them know that they need the remote control. The easy-to-understand symbols make WASHLET® intuitive to use.
You can find the instruction manual for each WASHLET® model in the download section of each individual product page on our homepage. You could print it out, for example, and put it in the bathroom for your guests’ reference.
